Adjusting the motor bend setting while downhole improves hole quality and increases rate of penetration throughout all sections of the well. SelectShift improves rate of penetration drilling by increasing the rotary/bit revolutions per minute (rpm) in the straight position, extending well reach and reducing side-loading of the bit. Preparations before use
Surface inspection before tripping in
Check the angle of downhole motor and the diameter of stabilizer whether meet the needs of the drilling processes; Check the upper locating slot of the bypass valve and the upper locating slot of the bent housing whether are in the same tool face. Except the connections between lifting sub and by-pass valve, the other connections between the housings of downhole motor shall be coated with locking agent. Carefully check whether the connection threads are loose and the housing is with any corrosion or scratches affected the safety.
Check by-pass valve:
Put the downhole motor into turntable and by-pass valve into the center in the easy watch position with the lifting sub. Clamp the downhole motor tightly with safety slips, and then remove the lifting sub. Press downward the valve core with hammer handle or wood stick. Fill with water from the top of the valve, there should no leakage from the valve and no great drop of water level, and then loosen the wood stick, the valve core is sprang up to its original position. The filled water shall flow out evenly from the side holes. This is normal.
Check the clearances:
Before installing the drill bit, check the bearing clearances of the downhole motor. the check method is that measure the distance between the lower end of lower bearing housing and the upper end of the drill bit sub, and the measurement departs two times: one time, measure the distance under the conditions of downhole motor freely Hanging with the elevator; second time, measure the distance when the full weight of the downhole motor is on the turntable. The above two measured distances are the amount of the axial bearings clearance. After operation, recheck the clearance to determine the wear amount of the bearing during operation.
